We’re strengthening protection against VPNs

With their ability to bypass safety protections and potentially allow ākonga to access inappropriate content, we know Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are a concern for schools.

We already block known VPNs, but the game of online whack-a-mole means new VPNs constantly emerge, and a multi-pronged approach is required to block as much harmful VPN usage as possible – that’s why we’re introducing more ways for N4L to block ākonga use of VPNs.

We know there are some genuine uses for VPNs in schools, so this is not a blanket block on all VPNs. Instead, we’re combining network traffic analysis and feedback from schools to block VPNs that don’t support learning.
