Our technology partners have recently made improvements to N4Lā€™s Web Filtering with the addition of new filtering categories that are now available for users. The new categories are listed below;

  • DIY Projects ā€“ Guidance and information to create, improve, modify, decorate and repair something without the aid of experts or professionals.
  • Hunting ā€“ Professional or sport hunting, gun clubs and other hunting related sites.
  • Military ā€“ Military, such as the armed forces, military bases, military organizations, anti-terrorism.
  • Online Meetings ā€“ Online meetings, desktop sharing, remote access and other tools that facilitate multi-location collaboration.
  • Paranormal ā€“ UFOs, ghosts, cryptid, telekinesis, urban legends and myths.
  • Personal VPN ā€“ Virtual private network (VPN) sites or tools that are typically for personal use and may or may not be approved for corporate usage.

Of particular note is the category of ā€˜Personal VPNā€™. VPN tools may be used to bypass filtering solutions, so N4L has made the call to add this category to our global web filtering block. However, we are aware that VPN can also have legitimate uses. If your users are impacted by this change please call our helpdesk (0800 532 764) and we can help configure your individualised web filtering settings to allow legitimate VPN applications.

Additionally you may wish to consider how your school would like us to apply the other new categories above. Ā If you would like help configuring your filters to take advantage of these new options please contact our helpdesk.
